New at this so apologies!...got a 30 yr plus old boiler that suddenly stopped firing up yesterday. Electric and pump appear to be working but pilot light wont fire up....told years ago " parts are sparse"...cant afford 3k without uncle " visa" helping out....anyone recommend / advise on how to get replacement but without large financial outlay...perhaps monthly over 10 yrs?

I've got to say I'm very surprised as to the speed of your engineer to get a quote to you on such short notice seeing as though the fault only happened yesterday. I wouldn't have expected the engineer to visit until the next working day....i.e Tuesday. To get a quote of £3k to fix the fault is amazing.

I'd get another quote to repair the boiler. £3k is very high. I doubt it would cost more than a couple hundred to repair.

If you can't afford £3k and can't borrow £3k from the bank then you'll have to go without. You don't need heating for the next 6 months so you can use that time to save as much as possible.

If you've got a hot water cylinder you can use the immersion element to get hot water. Using the immersion element isn't that much more expensive than using the gas to heat the water.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

The normal fault when a pilot light won't stay lit is a faulty thermocouple - a very simple repair for a fitter. A standard thermocouple, costing around £10 will fit most boilers.
