Clutch advice
Hi,
I recently had my car serviced and when driving home from the garage broke down. I had just filled up and lost power to the car (the garage that serviced it said that the clutch had gone based on my car moving in reverse with the handbrake on). The car drove fine once the engine cooled down but I soon lost power again driving home after the breakdown man had informed me the car was fine. I managed to get it to Evans Halshaw who ran a diagnostic test on it. They informed me that the clutch was slipping along with a few other issues. I didn't trust the amount they wanted for the work to be done on the car so arranged for it to be looked at by a local garage. The mechanic here took the car out and looked at the clutch and is adamant that it isn't slipping. He said that he could tell it was worn but that we would be wasting our money changing it now. I keep worrying about it though, I think because I have no answer as to why it lost power in the first place. I have been driving around without any problems. I did try some tests to check the clutch - so if I change to second gear from third around 20 mph the revs do shoot up (which I think is good) and putting the clutch in results in revs going down and increasing again when lifted. But, the car is moving off in third gear rather than stalling. I do think, before Iany of the problems that this would have made the car stall. Can anyone offer any advice. Do I need to replace the clutch? TIA

Why do so many posters with very low posts counts and new joiners have issues with Evans Halshaw0

I m not sure if a diagnostic would be able to measure clutch wear or if it is slipping.I know my clutch is slipping,, when it slips ! that is , I`m driving along and the cars revving away going nowhere. Thats when its time do replace the plates.I know the modern way is to replace the job lot, costing hundreds but my old Vauxhall Cavaliers clutch was a doddle to replace it and cost £20 for new plate and drove fine for many years until I scrapped it.0

The reason people replace the entire clutch when the job is done is simply because the most expensive but is labour.
And the Cavalier was one of the easiest clutches to change in a FWD car that I know of.0 -
The clutch will be more likely to slip when eveything is warmed up which may explain why it seems to be Ok when cold. So when warm, drive up to around 10mph, then put the gear into third and rev hard. If the revs shoot up and the car only slowly gains speed then the clutch is slipping.
"the garage that serviced it said that the clutch had gone based on my car moving in reverse with the handbrake on" <-- complete nonsense0 -

Yes, I've heard terrible things about them since this happened! ||They also said my tyres were cracking - two garages have said they're not. I also paid them £40 to check where an oil leak was coming from - they claimed head gasket , yet they hadn't even cleaned the oil off to really be able to see - plus they'd said they'd cleaned it in their report.0
