Using Trivago

I have used Trivago to find a hotel in Californis for a 2 night stay. It comes back with a deal at £111. I then hit the 'Show Deal' button and it takes me to the hotel's site where the deal is now £245, plus tax. Why the enormous difference? What am I missing here?
There is no apparent help page on Trivago, so I really don't know what is going on.
Can anyone give me a simple and acceptable explanation?

Sometimes the prices on the search result page are for 1 night, and sometimes when you click through the currency changes to local, depending on the site. Which city and hotel?0

Lemon Tree in Santa Barbara. Yes, I allowed for currency changes and even 1 night against the two requested. I also see the same effect with other hotels and locations. It really seems that Trivago's figures really don't match the hotel site, so what is the real story?0

Had a quick look and wasn't able to find dates where the hotel's own website was showing as a deal, so can't be sure. The deals offered by Booking.com and Expedia seemed to more or less match when clicked through to. Possible that the rates varied per night and the search result showed a one night price for the cheapest night (as opposed to an average), but that is speculation on my part.0 -
Trivago doesn't (usually) scrape prices from hotels, but from aggregators. It means it's a little more removed from any fluctuations0

I think SB is quite an expensive place to stay, have you checked b&b at all?0
