[RESOLVED] Removal man lost an item- what are my rights?

Whether they were a tea leaf or made a genuine mistake can probably be determined from the fact they accepted the reward ;-) If I had taken the item thinking it was abandoned, and then saw the OP's notice, I'd return it and refuse the reward!0

That's my thinking too. I wouldn't accept the money and if have explained and apologised for taking the item in the first place!0

Fifty quid for working out what one of the neighbours is like? Cheap, I'd say.
Let's hope the others aren't the same....0 -
If you saw somebody moving out and then saw a box in the corridor, it's possible it looked like "abandoned rubbish" rather than "overlooked nice item" and somebody could've thought "I'll have that" thinking it was the outgoing person too lazy to walk it to the bin/tip.
Unfortunately, I think some people will pinch anything that isn't nailed down.
A friend of ours was clearing out his late mother's flat and as it was seven stories up, he was bringing stuff downstairs and stacking it outside, as a prelude to loading up the car and taking it to the local dump.
By the time he had finished and brought the car round to fill it up, most of the stuff had miraculously disappeared (which saved him the bother of going to the dump, so it was actually quite advantageous!)
A cunning plan, Baldrick? Whatever it was, it's got to be better than pretending to be mad; after all, who'd notice another mad person around here?.......Edmund Blackadder.0 -

Me too:T
I'd have been very embarrassed at taking something I thought was a "throw-out" and very anxious to prove I hadnt deliberately stolen it.0 -

Not a viewpoint I'd have personally.
I've chucked stuff outside my home before now - and put up a big notice by it telling people to help themselves to it if they wanted it. So that was fair enough when people did duly take most of it - and I didnt have so much to get rid of.
There wasnt any notice by that lot though....:cool:0 -
Your reward was more generous that I envisaged, but I presume you're happy to have your property back. I'd be making sure the other neighbours knew how "helpful" this person was in looking after other people's property."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius0

If someone took it by accident thinking it was being chucked out, once they realised it was wanted they should of refused the reward (though if someone offered me a fiver or tenner I would feel great but not fifty)
Taking the item then getting £50 seems like they are just wanting something for free.0
