Vauxhall meriva 09 power steering failure
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me, hubby was driving home in meriva last night and the power steering suddenly failed causing him to nearly crash, the EPS light also came on. I have been googling the issue and it seems that this is a common fault with these cars and some people have had the work carried out on them for free as it seems to be a problem with the car not wear and tear IYSWIM. Anyway I have found an article that says there was a watchdog episode about this and this was vauxhalls statement to them
Vauxhall takes any product issues which may impact the behaviour of the vehicle very seriously. The Meriva electric power steering system is designed to be fail-safe in line with the EEC Directive that a vehicle must be able to steer in the event of a power steering failure.
The number of incidences of loss of power assistance on the Meriva is low. We would ask customers who experience loss of power assistance to contact their local Vauxhall dealer who has been briefed and trained to diagnosis and carry out the repair. This will be done free of charge.
For additional convenience, including contact details for the Vauxhall dealer network, the Vauxhall customer assistance centre (freephone 0800 026 4970) is available to help.
I have phoned the number and they say there is no recall and can only get a free diagnostic. I just wondered if anyone has any evidence of the issues with this car or that they got theirs fixed for free?
Thanks in advance
Sam

I would get the free diagnostic done and take it from there.
They're not going to promise they're going to fix it without seeing it when it might not be down specifically to the pump failure.0 -
Has the car been serviced within the Vauxhall Dealer network? If not there may be limited goodwill to assist with the repair.0

Its 7 years old how can you possibly say its not wear and tear related?
best thing is as advised have the fault codes read with a view to it pointing to a component failure like the torque steer sensor or something as simple as a failing battery its been offered for free so get the report and report bacjk0 -
Which pump? .... as far as I know it has electric power steering and the 'motor' is part of the steering column, so very expensive.0
