No claims overlap

Hi everyone,

Please, I really need some help.

I recently bought a new car. The insurance on my old car runs until the middle of May at which point my husband will take over the policy. On my new policy, with the new car, I stated I had 5 years no claims discount. I stupidly didn't realise that I shouldn't have done this as my other policy is still running. Now the new insurer is asking for proof of my no claims. I'm sure my old insurer will not give this until the policy ends, at which point the new insurer will realise I had 2 policies for 4 weeks. Even if they do issue the no claims cert before the end of the policy, this will still be obvious there was an overlap to the new insurer.

We have already taken out a new policy for the old car in my husbands name.

The main problems are
1) If I cancel the old policy, I must cancel the renewal in my husbands name and so incur 2 cancellation fees
2) If I cancel the old policy, my new insurer will still see an overlap of 2 weeks in the NCB and penalise me.

So what I'm wondering is which would be better, or if you have any solution to this mess
1) to come clean to the new insurer and hope that they just charge me extra for the first month as if I had no NCB
2) Cancel the new policy the day before the old policy runs out on the old car, pay the cancellation fee and then take out a complete new policy. I want to avoid the new insurer cancelling my policy as I don't want to have this hanging over me in the future.

I know I have been naive thinking it wouldn't matter if the NCB overlapped by a month, we've never had 2 cars before, and I feel terrible so please don't tell me off anymore than I already have been myself.

Many thanks for reading and please hopefully someone can advise me.

Cancelling a renewal before it is in effect shouldn't incur a cancellation charge.

  • Thank you, that is useful to know. I would however have the cancellation on the old policy, which I don't mind, but the new insurer would still know my NCB overlapped.

As you have nil NCD now to use on your new policy, then your new insurer (the one asking for your proof) won't allow you to pay for one month with nil NCD and 11 months with 5 years!

You need to cancel the new policy now before they discover your "mistake"

Then put your new car on your existing policy. See if they will allow you to keep your old car on the same policy pending its "disposal".

If not, then cancel your husband's new policy now and get him to take out a new one (with nil NCD) now
