Any suggestions to improve my kitchen. *Pic included

Hi. We've just moved into our house and cant afford a brand new kitchen. Problem is its really garish yellow units and i would love ideas for how to improve it (short of ripping it out!).

I know a lot of people have suggested painting the units but the worktops are red/brown and i am rubbish at design and what may go? The walls have cream paper that we want to go too.

Any ideas appreciated. Thank you.

Change the handles and paint the doors.

They look cream in the photo, rather than garish yellow.

More expensive option is to change the doors for gloss handless ones in cream or go for wooden doors.

My advice is to live with it for a year, you can start all sorts of costly refurb projects when you rush into things

I'd change the worktop, will make a big difference, also remove the pelmet thingy at the top it dates it a bit. I'd personally not bother painting the doors as thats hours of work that may not turn out as you'd hope.

New doors would be an expense worth considering

  • As above, paint the doors and change hardware. Save up to replace worktop if you can't afford it now. If you could afford to replace the doors that would be less hassle though you'd still need to paint any exterior cabinet trim.

Why do you feel the need to change anything?

I like the worktop, mine is similar but blue.

The tiling looks a little plain - all one colour.

The floor maybe looks 'odd' doesn't match anything, consider vinyl tiles - perhaps various shades of terracotta to match the worktops.

With the units - consider - changing two solid doors for ones with glass - to make a 'display unit'.

Does that picture accurately represent the colour because they don't look "garish yellow" to me?

I might change the drawer handles and the flooring rather than the doors.

I fi kitchens for a living. TBH, whatever ypu do will look like ahalf hearted and cheap way of disguising a kitchen.

You would be better buying some sugar soap and giving everything s good clean down. Then live with it. The kitchen, although dated and not to. Your liking is perfectly serviceable and functional. Live with it for a year, put the money that you might spend on painting the doors, new worktops etc to a 'kitchen refit' fund and save for a new kitchen.

Whatever you do as a temporary fix, you wont be happy with.

Thank you for all the replies. Really appreciate the ideas.I guess the logical thing is to just live with it till we can afford to do the whoke thing as really it just means changing things to fit in with existing colour schemes that i dont like.

No1catman, its not so much the worktop colour. I just feel it doesnt go with yellow or the floor.

The garish yellow looks worse in darker lights. I think the flash and bright day have made it look less offensive in the picture.

How much are you looking to refit a kitchen to a functional basic level or does that entirely depend on your specifications?

Change the work tops yourselves and change the kitchen handles. You can probably do both of those for £300. You can go cheap if it's only a temporary measure for a year or two.

If you've a steady hand I'd paint the cupboards too. But those handles are horrid.

Are the cupboard units in themselves quite good quality? Much life left in them?
