I never said it was safe.. I said some seats you can use with the seat belt once a certain weight limit has been reached depending on the car seat itself. But the child doesnt just sit on the straps they are either removed or tuck in neatly behind.. sitting on them must be incredibly uncomfortable.

If your daughter has concerns she should ring the pokice or social services .. if he may be breaking the law or putting the child at risk.

I am afraid if he thought driving a car without breaks is safe then he would not be taking a child of mine anywhere

Driving a car without breaks is perfectly safe if you aren't going far. I do it several times every day.

The above answers from janed9388, Kynthia and pigpen have reassured my daughter that the little 'un will be safe in his car. Thank you for your replies.
They have not said it was safe. They stated that their particular seats are designed to be used with or without the integral harness through the various stages - often referred to as 1-2-3 seats. If the seat is not designed to be used without the integral harness it is illegal and dangerous to do so.
As a driver, if you are convicted of failing to ensure that a child passenger is using an appropriate child car seat or wearing a seat belt according to the legal requirements described above, the fixed penalty is a £100 fine. If the case is taken to court, you could face a fine of up to £500.

We've no idea whether the seat can be used with a seatbelt and whether it is fitted correctly. I'm just saying there are some seats that can move from a harness to seatbelt. I don't know if there's a safety officer at the police our council you could get advice from if you suspect a child is unsafe in someone's car
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

OK, so I misunderstood. Thank you for clarifying.

My daughter will try and find out what seat he has. Whether she will be able to identify it visually remains to be seen - he refuses to tell her what seat it is.

Why doesn't she just buy a seat for them to use if shes concerned?

They are not together. And he wouldn't accept one from her anyway. He is taking the child to visit his relatives - a very long journey. Because my daughter is worried that the seat isn't safe, she has offered him the loan of the one I use in my car. He has refused it

He said "government regulations say that over 15kg she needs a high backed booster or a booster seat restrained with a seatbelt, not a harness, she is substantially in excess of this weight. I have taken her off the simple booster that she is over the weight for but she is fine in the seat she is in"
