Closing 123 Current account

Options
I have a joint 123 current account with my good lady, which we both stick our pay into... I also have an older 123 current account for myself as an everyday fund for non important stuff. For my own account, the £5 monthly fee is not value anymore really for me, as I typically only ever have about 1k sitting in it.

How easy is it to transfer my direct debits?

I am not sure if I need to use a switching service as I already have the Halifax £5 reward account, and the TSB 2k 5% payer.

I will probably transfer my money to the TSB account, but I have a few direct debits tied to this Santander account, how do I go about changing the direct debits easily?

You should still be able to continue to use the switcher service, at least that was the advice I got from Lloyds a while back when I enquired about changing things over to them. In end I left it as it was but call TSB or Halifax and check to see if they'll let you use it still otherwise just set up new DDs but make sure that you have money in the old account incase they don't switch across in time.

It is very easy to change DDs. Wait until a DD has been paid, then inform the payee of your new sort code and account number. Many payees let you do this online or on the phone.

You then need to monitor that the DD appears on your new account. You can cancel the old DDs in your Santander account yourself, or wait for the payee to cancel them.
  • Depending on which bank you use, they may be able to use the switch service to move the direct debits and any balance in to an existing account and close your sole Santander one for you.

Do the DD's manually then at least you are in control

Wait until DD goes out, set up new DD on new account, easy to do online, close old account.

Full switch will be easiest. This way you only have to make contact with TSB. All your Direct Debits will move and the Santander account closes (without having to contact them).

You'll be covered by the Switch Guarantee. For further peace of mind you could choose a switch date 7 working days after your Direct Debit payment.

Like most people have said; just change your direct debits yourself online, I changed one with Three this morning and it took less than a minute.
