Vent ( & praise) Esure car Insurance

I have been with Esure car insurance for a few years, come renewal time I always do an on-line comparison and then ring them up with details of the lower quotes I have found and they always cut a deal. (doesn't stop them trying to hike the premium every year at renewal, but that is the nature of the game).
This year, (insurance due in May) I knew I wanted to add some modifications to the car so thought it would be sensible to get everything covered from the renewal date to save the ridiculous prices charged for changing things once the insurance is running, prior to my renewal quote arriving I spoke to Customer Services and explained the modifications I intended making and they came back with a premium increase of £90.
Couple of days later the renewal came through and as usual the basic premium had increased (up by about £60) So when I add on the mods that would be an overall increase of £150.
I ring CS to 'negotiate' the renewal, chap goes away and comes back with ' Sorry, the renewal we have quoted is the rock bottom price we can offer - no further discounts available.
Not best pleased, I run all the comparison sites, results from Go Compare come back with Esure as the cheapest with a premium about £10 cheaper than the renewal I had received but including all the mods and with a lower excess (down from £100 to £50).
I save the quote and ring Esure, guy in customer service sounds sceptical about the Go compare quote and says he will have to go through it and check that it is directly comparable with the esure renewal details. After about 5 minutes he comes back on and agrees that they will accept the Go compare price so I have saved about £160, stayed with the same insurer and got a lower excess.
I don't understand the car insurance industry.
