Job Seekers Allowance - HELP!!!!

My husband is being made redundant on Saturday and has been looking for a job since he found out he was losing his job, but has had no success to date. On Tuesday next week he will be applying for JSA but I don't want to apply for JSA for myself as I have a number of health issues which prevent me from working.. I do not claim any benefits and have tried to claim for ESA but because I do not fit into any of the strict descriptors I am not eligible. What I want to know is whether I will be forced to claim JSA and made to apply for jobs as well as my husband? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

If your husband has sufficient NI contributions he will be eligible for six months contribution based JSA. You would not be part of that claim. However if the household income is low and savings less than £6,000 then you would be able to get income based top up which is a joint claim. After six montsh any claim would need to be joint income based.

  • Thanks for that. If it does become a joint claim does that mean I will be expected to look for work?
  • Why not apply for ESA? Until you do you have no idea as to wether you will get it or not as its a points based system.

If he is being made redundant on Saturday why is he waiting until Tuesday to claim JSA. Get your claim in ASAP because there's 7 days waiting time anyway. Oh , and you actually claim online nowadays.
  • Hi,

We live in a Universal Credit catchment area but we don't fit the criteria because I am not well enough to work (but I cannot get ESA) so he has to apply for Job Seekers by telephone. He rang yesterday but because he isn't finishing his job until 5pm Saturday he can't start his claim until he is officially redundant, if he starts his JSA claim before this then they said they would have to take his working hours into account! They told him to ring on Monday morning but as it is a Bank Holiday they are not working so he has to ring on Tuesday morning!
