I then received a reply saying they couldn't make amendments yet, they obviously did change something though as those changes are reflected in my 2016/2017 provisional statement.

Would I have received a 2015/2016 provisional because I reported another change about 2 months ago too?

It looks like this is just a timing thing and they send out generic letters that don't apply to people.

Bit of a pain though, 2 weeks after trying to report a change I get a letter threatening if I don't report it in 30 days I could be fined (but it's impossible to report the change).

I asked if the award was for 2016/17 and you said it wasn't? Now you've said you have a provisional award for 2016/17?

You shouldn't have received a provisional award notice for 2015/16 unless you didn't do a renewal last year for some reason.

I have yet so see a person be charged a penalty for not reporting a change within 30 days other than those who have done it deliberately and been investigated.

And even then - the penalty can only be levied if the change was one on the "mandatory" list: https://www.gov.uk/hmrc-internal-manuals/tax-credits-technical-manual/tctm05100

The one I'm talking about was 2015/2016

Both were delivered on the same day

    just to add

    The forms are slightly different

1 is provisional tax credits for the other is Provisional tax credits statement for

    the 2015/16 one (statement) says,
"Thank you for telling us about a recent change of circumstances. This change means we have to review the amount of tax credits paid to you in tax year 6 April 2015 to 5 April 2016"

If you sent the letter on 2nd or 3rd April it's highly unlikely it will have been received and auctioned

That's what I get for feeding the baby and posting at the same time.
