Insurance renewal quote vs comparison site quote..

My insurance automatically renewed with Hastings Premier a couple of months ago at £47 a month, which had actually gone up from £30 a month that I payed for the previous year. I understand premiums sometimes go up and I'm happy with the level of cover I get so I left it..

Out of interest I've done a couple of comparison website searches and Hastings Premier will offer me a price of £30 a month again.

Would it be ridiculous to cancel my current policy with Hastings, just to take out the one I've got online and save myself a couple of hundred quid or so for the year?

Just a thought :j

  • Check out their fees for cancelling your existing policy and weigh up any saving against the new policy. Don't forget, you will have to start earning another years' NCD as you wont get any for the part year.

my breakdown cover was automatically renewed on a sunday, but they had a 14 day no quibble cancellation option so they gave me a full refund after renewal.

prtty sure most insurances and renewals of this sort have cooling off period.
  • Cooling off period, yes, 14 days ? But not "a couple of months

£360 up to £564 and you were happy? As above, check the cost of cancel and see if others are cheaper, you may still save money.

Might be worth seeing what your current firms quote was on the comparison site and then asking them to reduce your current insurance policy to this as an alternative to cancelling. How willing they are to do this will depend on what the cancellation charges are like. The comparison site quote from my current insurer always undercuts my renewal by about 20-30%.

It might not work cancelling and taking a policy with the same company because they might recognise you as an existing customer and not give you the 'new customer' discount you are seeing on the comparison site though equally they might but you'd want to know before incurring cancellation charges.

Call them up, tell them you've discovered that as a new customer you'd been quoted £less and all them to check your file for why your premium was pushed so high for remaining with them. Last time I did this with contents insurance, my premium nearly halved for the same policy with the same insurer... And the annual increases have been far more modest ever since, too - still not caught up with the rate of 8 years ago!
