It's beginning to look like the 084 range of numbers has very little in the way of legitimate users and has become the home for a variety of scams.

Ever since Ofcom introduced their service fee plus access fee nonsense last year the cost of calling a "1p/min" 0843 number has gone up to 11p from BT making them useless for callthrough services which was their main use.

Prior to 1 July 2015, the 'NTS Retail Condition' imposed by Ofcom solely on BT meant that when you paid BT for a call to an 084, 087, 09 or 118 number, almost all of the money was passed on to whoever you were calling. BT was prevented from making margin on call origination. The rule was imposed many years ago. It is the ending of that rule that has increased prices, not the splitting of the call charge into its constituent parts.
