A prime example of our soft touch ineptitude, we just awarded a boat building contract to S Korea, whereas the French would never do this (on such a scale) - they find ways around EU rules to ensure Frances sources from France.

What do EU rules have to do with us letting a contact to build RFA Tankers (that no UK shipyard bid for) to a S Korean shipyard?

On a laissez faire economic view there is no difference, however 6000 jobs in one place is a magnitude worse than 120 places losing 50 jobs.

The other argument is that sales (or largely Chinese tat admittedly) lost by BHS will be gained by every retailer from John Lewis, Ikea, Primark and Amazon. Or the stores will be put to better economic use, the capital (such that it was) will be employed better.

For steel, the sales & output will just migrate overseas to China, the land and buildings won't be put to a different use, the employees may retrain and be employed elsewhere.

It's not the only Amazon fulfillment centre in the UK, you know. They've got two in Scotland, and five in England. Can't see that it's odd that Wales should have just the one.

Isn't it all to do with the number of people within x miles? What is the population of South Wales? Isn't it about 23 and 100,000 sheep?
    I think....

About 2 million, I think. People, that is. And there's a motorway that goes all the way to Bristol and beyond. So there's probably a catchment area of about 6 or 7 million. I don't think Amazon build fulfillment centres just for the fun of it.

Tata Steel employs about 6,000 people in the UK whereas BHS has 11,000 and Austin Reed 1,100 according to press reports so surely those shops are twice as important to the economy.....?

4,000 jobs directly in Port Talbot along with a further 17,000 indirectly related in South Wales.

Retail space will be occupied by someone else.

Protectionism and nationalisation tends to be for the industries that are heavy on the import/export. When the UK steel mills or coal plants close its directly onto the balance of trade. If BHS goes its almost no difference to economic activity or the balance of Trade. It may in fact be a positive outcome increasing productivity as the old BHS customers go to other stores who can run at higher productivity.

now, I'm sure you made a very pursuasive argument why the balance of trade doesn't matter (everything balances out): or was that when you were arguing that the EU was a wonderful thing and doesn't apply in this situation?

The world is a volatile place and China is swapping junk for Gold and stock piling Gold.
We have a paper currency, a economy based on "spells" a bit of paper that has power of belief in the words written on it .
The Chinese will have an economy based on precious resources.

There can only be one winner here in this greed before brains world.

The Ability to forge steel can win or lose a war.
It is about our national security and protection of our people.

We as people must realise these greedy career politicians are selling us down the road.
The consequences of these crooks do not even bare thinking about, should the world change to conflict.

All wars are about money and resources and we have taken leave of our senses here, the world can and will change and we are going to get our backsides handed to us.
I do Contracts, all day every day.
