USA and Canadian Visa

Im traveling to Vegas and then from there to Toronto. Someone had suggested that there is one visa/ESTA that covers me for both. Is that true as I cant seem to find anything about this. They both seem to have similar electronic systems but they do appear to be separate.

Cheers.

Canada and the USA are separate countries and so have their own entry criteria. The ESTA only applies to the USA. Canada have their own and different entry criteria.

    ESTA for US
    ETA for Canada

2 separate visa waivers, not interchangeable.

Unless you're entering Canada by land or sea. Perhaps that is where the person suggesting there is just one is getting confused. You would need a ESTA to enter the USA but could drive/sail to Canada without an ETA.

  • Thank you very much.
My research had suggested there were two different ones needed but just wanted to check before applying.

We did a coach tour of Washington, New York and Niagara year before last, Esta for USA but nothing required for Canada. Incidentally there were queues of almost two hours to cross back to the USA from Niagara so pick your crossing time.

One other point, US dollars are accepted in Canada but not the other way round. I'd advise using a credit card to pay as the Canadians treat the US dollars value as the same as theirs which of course it's not.

The ETA requirement for Canada only came into effect from March this year

That's probably why we didn't need one :D

You wouldn't have needed it anyway. Just like the ESTA, it's only for those flying (and arriving by cruise ship?), not for those crossing the land border.
