TfL Fares

Options
I have a feeling I know the answer to this one, but hoping I'm wrong.

I work four days a week and it works out cheaper to use contactless rather than pay for a season ticket.

I go from Zone 1 to Zone 7. - £5.60

While this is all fine and everything, it is slightly quicker for me to go:-

Zone 1 to Zone 4 - £3.90
Zone 4 to Zone 7 - £2.80
Total - £6.70

i.e I get the train to one train station and then walk to another to continue on my journey home.

Now I know the difference is only £1.10, but this will soon add up and there are days when I really need to get the earlier train, so can't just not do the above.

Will I be charged the higher amount or will the really clever TfL computer work out that it's still one journey?

It depends on how the system views the two stations.

In some cases, they are viewed as a legitimate interchange on a single journey, in others not.

If you tell us what the interchange is, someone can probably tell you, or you can read about it here:-

    https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/out-of-station-interchanges

There are time limits on the interchanges, which in some cases are generous enough for a quick bit of shopping, e.g. Victoria Underground - Victoria Mainline in 40 minutes.

Thanks. Didn't know that. The stations are:-

Northwick Park (Met Line) which is a 6 minute to Kenton (London Overground).

So you go out of london for work? Looking at the TFL map there are very few stations in Zone 7 so I assume you're talking about coming out to Rayners lane on the Met/Picc line, crossing over to come back to harrow and then again crossing to head out towards chesham/watford?

If this is right there is a pick oyster card reader on Rayners lane platform which is a sort of 'check in' service which is there for people doing the journey the other way to stop them having to pay for a into london(zone 1) and back out again. I'm not 100% sure how it would work the other way as, although I work for the underground, I don't do anything customer facing or have anything to do with ticket pricing.

Your best bet would be to ring the customer services 0343 222 1234* (option 2 then option 5)

I have just checked and it is on there. I had never heard of this interchange thingie. Thank you so much!!!

I have 20 minutes to get to the other station. And it says payg only. I'm guessing this is what I will be doing by paying by contactless card?

Sorry, I was being a numpty and describing my journey home from work as it is only then that I will need to do the walking to the other station (it is to get my kids from various after school things that require me getting the earlier train).

I wasn't a million miles away. I tend to be quite blinkered about other transport providers working for LUL but I actually work at Harrow on the Hill.

If you actually leave a station and enter another one it will count as a separate journey. I doubt you will be able to work it as a single journey especially as its with different providers.

But Kenton also has the Bakerloo line going through it and what a previous poster provided a link to, it says that the two stations are out of station interchanges.

I'm sorry to be saying it, but you are mistaken.

Please read the TfL document linked to in post#2.

Here's the link again: TfL - Out-of-station interchanges.

    Phew!

I know it's only £1.10, but I've just worked out that that's £2.20 a day, £8.80 a week, £457.60 a year saving (if I was to go the quicker route each time)!
