Which is what I said Murph ...........Wonder why you didn't believe me ?

    cheers mgdavid.
That was posted whilst I was typing my post.

a quick google of travel insurance if I become pregnant opened my eyes.
It looks like a )who you're insured with and
    b) what the good Dr says.

The Direct Line policy is here #9.

I read that as being we'll cover you if you're not medicallly able to fly or your airline won't fly you. Rather than letting you cancel, just beacuse you're well on the way :)

Wouldn't it just be easier to ring the insurance company you took travel insurance out with and ask them what the situation would be if she is told by the doctor that she can't fly ?

Unless you haven't bothered taking out travel insurance you are massively overcomplicating what is a frequent and not unusual issue.

Thank you malkie. I think I may not have explained myself properly about the name change by deed poll ... I've heard of people changing their names by deed poll, to match the name on the booking. In fact I think it may have been a Martin Lewis tip somewhere along the line.

Eg ... Flight is booked in the name of Fred Smith.
Fred Smith can no longer fly so Jo Bloggs changes his name by deed poll to Fred Smith (only a small fee applies to do this I believe). Jo Bloggs is now officially called Fred Smith and can apply for a new passport in that name, using his deed poll certificate as proof of name change. Jo Bloggs can then travel on the ticket of Fred Smith because that is now his legal name!

A bit complicated and it would all have to be done in reverse on their return from the trip to change their name back again, but it may be something I will consider so that the tickets are not wasted and 2 other family members can join us!!!

  • It's not that I didn't belief you duchy... I just hadn't considered the zika virus and it may just throw a different angle on things as we may have a legitimate medical reason that she can't fly

Being the cynical old puddy cat that I am, I don't believe everything that I read on an internet forum :D (:p)

My addition was from googling and checking my own travel policy.
I'll confess to being very surprised.
I'd always considered starting a family as being a lifestyle choice, rather than an insurable event.

I can see that a Doctor telling someone that they can't fly for a legitimate medical reason would be fair grounds for a claim.
But a Dr saying 'don't fly because you're 6 months pregnant when you leave the country & 7 months when you return' not being a legitimate reason for claiming on insurance.

I'm really hoping someone can help here because I'm completely stressing myself out!

This was to be a holiday of a lifetime, with a 2 week road trip from New York to Florida followed by 2 weeks in Orlando.

You don't get out much do you ;)

meaning she will be 7 months pregnant by the time we return at the end of August.

our nephew has had to give up his job as a self employed joiner and go to work for a firm so that he has a guaranteed wage once the baby is born. There is no way his new employer will let him have a month off, just after he's started.

    Have you asked?

Lots of ideas so far but here's one.

If employer allows nephew 2 weeks off then why not try to change flights so they miss the last two weeks for him and Mrs?

She will be less pregnant (Is that a real term?) and they will not miss much of the trip of a lifetime (honestly)

    Z class tickets are non-refundable...

To whomever mentioned that first is UC on Virgin, I am well aware thank you but was quoting the OP. Also, I read it that this was the price for 6 tickets.

That aside, OP, your Z bucket is the lowest Upper Class Fare code. Highly restricted in regards to changes/cancellations.

As given above, your best hope will be through your insurers.

Ginger I can't believe you haven't yet followed the advice and called your (or your nephew's) travel insurance company to discuss this. You may well be insured and there is no problem.

Taking the Zika virus out of the equation you may well be covered for the pregnancy anyway and this will solve everything. It seems you're just assuming you won't be covered?

The Zika angle may be one to peruse if the initial answer is no. But a call to the insurance first has to be simpler than deed poll name changes!

I'm beginning to wonder whether the nephew has insurance.

Unfortunately it is our problem because we paid for this trip for our nephew & his wife as a belated wedding present. My husband has been the father figure in his nephews life since he was 3 years old. There's no way they could afford to pay us back for the cost of the flights, even more so now that they have a baby on the way.

But it's not really your problem, is it?

You've bought them a lovely (and expensive) present and have already paid for the tickets .

Nephew and wife no longer wish to travel - a shame for them to miss out but, ultimately, their choice.

You're not out of pocket, you've just bought them a present they've chosen not to use
