Funeral Oversea's JSA

Hi just a quick question, are you allowed to travel overseas for a family funeral and still get your benefits. I remember going to visit my family in republic of Ireland and being told my benefit's would be stopped last time as it holiday abroad but what about for a funeral?

I've seen on another thread on another website people saying to just say you are going on holiday in this country instead

Yes that's why am on here asking for advice, rather than lying. The only other advice I have seen on this topic is everyone saying to lie and say you are going on holiday in this country.

Don't really how it's it's fair to let people go on holiday but not to a funeral. I guess because they think you can come back easier if a job comes up. My uncle hasn't passed away yet but we have been told it will be in the next few days probably. I need to go to support my family especially my elderly nan. It may fall on a the week am not due to sign on and I would only be going for a couple days.

I'd say sod it normally and just go and lose my benefits but am relaying on the money as I get married in June this year. Am desperate for a job (my have a few interviews lined up fingers crossed) I lost my old job in January due to illness and my contract ending and not being renewed due to being off sick.

Fingers crossed I get a job before then and they let me have the time off.

Am only asking on here to see if anyone knows the rules or been in this situation.

As I understand it Uncle is not a close relative for purposes of DWP. So the answer will almost certainly be no.

My advise would be to be honest and go, they may advise you to take it as holiday anyway. Lies to DWP simply come back to haunt you years down the line.

If you lie it is potentially benefit fraud. Is it worth the risk?

Simple thing to do is contact the DWP and find out what there stance on attending a funeral aboard..... you never know you might be lucky and speak to someone with an ounce of compassion....


Anyway even if they said No.... Balls to them if I was close to an uncle why should I be dictated by the man

Its not about compassion its about rules. Members of staff have on ability to override those rules. If you go abroad (apart from some strict job seeking rules) you cannot continue to receive benefits, in fact the claim will be closed if on JSA.

If OPs purposes for going are to support your grandmother can others do that? If you need/want to go that is your choice entirely but you cannot legally claim benefits for that period.

You can go on holiday ( or to a funeral) in this country for up to 2 weeks in the year. You do need to continue to look for work while away.

If you want to go abroad you need to sign off and do a rapid reclaim when you return. You will not receive any money for the period you are signed off.

Thanks for the reply I thought as much to be honest. They have to follow guidelines so am not expecting anyone to break rules for me. I was just wondering if the rules applied for family funerals.

My uncle died this morning sadly

Might have a temp job anyway from next week

OP, if you're only going for a couple of days and you don't have to miss signing on- just go, they'll never find out
