.........and how long will this delay the funds - and how much will it cost - he needs to bite the bullet and pay the cheque in (somewhere) to start the cashing process.

The issuing authority collect it via courier, they pay.

    Or cancel cheque.

OP needs to so what is best for them, contacting issuer as a priority to discuss options :)

Foreign cheques paid into the Halifax for example take upto 28 days to cash, can be negotiated or collected, or returned to you.

Form is completed in branch and send off the same day in internal post to head office department to process.

Not sure which bank the OP banks with, but I would seek out the procedure to credit US cheques into sterling account.

Worth noting the extra clearance day due to the upcoming bank holiday.

Good info, considering I have a Halifax account that may come in handy! Thanks Westie :)

I have a Halifax bank account, but in this case I'm using First Direct - for which the HSBC branch was rather unhelpful.

The insurance company is Metlife and I found they have an office in London. They gamely took a message and discussed what they could do - and came back with the answer 'nothing'.

It is up to the Metlife branch in Scranton Pa issuing the check. As someone mentioned earlier it is impossible to imagine a clerk authorising a wire transfer - they have already indicated by email that check is the only option.

After putting the process on hold for a few days, I've now asked them to go ahead with the clearing process.

    Thanks for everyone's comments.

I realise this is an old thread but I have a similar issue with a USD cheque being paid into a sterling account. I have already tried to get it paid into a First Direct account and failed - I can go into the reasons.

The question I have is did you manage to get your cheque processed by the Halifax as I have just paid in the replacement cheque into them as I have Bank of Scotland account.
  • I also have 2 USD cheques amounting to about $5000 I need to convert to Sterling. Don't mind waiting for the money but want the minimum fees possible. What is the best way to do this? My husband will actually be in the States in the next couple of weeks...could he get them cashed there? They are Citibank cheques if that makes any difference....and my current account is with Santander
  • Hi did you find a good way to cash your usd cheque??
I’ve just received one for US$1600 and don’t know what to do with it! Any help would be appreciated thank you

For the most recent 3 posters, although it's slightly old advice I believe post #13 is probably the best way, unless you can persuade whoever wrote the cheque to come into the 21st century and send it as an electronic payment, like the rest of the world does.
