Google chrome and Avast security

  • Just had the message from Google:
Your connection is not private. Attackers might be trying to steal your information from https://www.youtube.com.
https://www.youtube.com normally uses encryption to protect your information. When Google Chrome tried to connect to https://www.youtube.com this time, the website sent back unusual and incorrect credentials. This may happen when an attacker is trying to pretend to be https://www.youtube.com, or a Wi-Fi sign in screen has interrupted the connection. Your information is still secure because Google Chrome stopped the connection before any data was exchanged.

My niece turned the router off. Could that be why this message has appeared. We have been having some connection issues lately (socket has been damaged and have to hold the cable in position with blue tack).

Secure Virtual Machines is missing from the custom list.

Maybe it's hidden because that feature is unavailable (or disabled) on your PC. You could try enabling it in the BIOS if you can find the relevant option, but I wouldn't worry about it.
Could you tell me which one I should install? (apart from the one you've already mention). Thanks!
    File Shield - INSTALL
    Web Shield - INSTALL
Mail Shield - Install if you run an email client
    SafeZone Browser
    Browser Protection
Software Updater - Install if you want (see above post)
    Remote assistance
    SecureLine
    Cleanup
Rescue Disk - Install if you want (see above post)
    Browser Cleanup
Home Network Security - Install if you want (see above post)
    Passwords

(Ignore the ones I haven't marked with bold comments.)

Maybe the Avast browser extensions and/or plugins didn't get removed properly. Check the settings in Chrome and see if there are any Avast components you can remove. This link explains how to do that:

No -- it shouldn't be anything to do with that.

TBH, I use Avast on a lot of machines, but always do a Custom install and ONLY leave the 3 main shields ticked, disable all the others... it's still a good a/v but all these other un-needed extras I find are proving to be a nause rather than a help.

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

The extensions I've got are Google Docs and Google Docs Offline.

I will install Avast (custom) now.

Which is why I have ditched it. :)
I only used those 3 shields, but after every update, I found that I would have to go through and check that nothing had been altered/installed without permission.
Currently I use Free Bitdefender, I only see a pop up every few weeks, saying that it's finished a scan cycle. It scans when the machine is resting, gradually scanning the whole pc.
It even works on XP. :D
    Move along, nothing to see.

I'm trying out BD on a couple, including my main pc.... so far so good, other than having to create (another) account for continued updates

  • *touches wood* since the reinstall of Avast (customised) I haven't seen anything from them. However, Google Chrome is still giving me Your connection is not private. Attackers might be trying to steal your information...
I have noticed since the reinstall of Avast, this google message has only appeared when the router has no connection. For example, this evening I get on the internet only for a 30 seconds or so before my loose connection (I have to use tack to hold the cable in place) comes undone and I have no wifi. I am unaware of this and carry on until that Google Chrome message appears. I have a feeling I've lost connection because of this. I fix the cable back into place and then no more Chrome message. I've been online without any disconnections or message from anyone for 2 hours now.
Has this got something to do with it or I am reading too much into this? But this message doesn't appear everytime I lose connection.
  • After a few days of nothing, Avast has popped up again. Unknown to me, the wi-fi was off whilst I tried to do a google search. Avast says web shield has blocked these sites because of expired certificate. I have uninstalled Avast and am having go with Avira again.
While there was nothing from Avast for the past few days, Google Chrome were still giving me that message Your connection is not private. Attackers might be trying to steal your information.
They only appeared when I was in the middle of surfing and lost connection.
