Old age whimsy

As I cruise through my early seventies I get the notion to ride another motor bike. After all, I haven't ridden one for over thirty years. However, just a couple of weeks ago, something in the press or online provoked the thought, "No Dave, it has to be a Focus RS!"
Now, our Honda Jazz sits happily in the garage, week in week out, and does on the rare occasions we can't carry what we need on the bus, come grumbling out of it's nice warm home for a trip to Costco or Squires, therefore, is the following possible, do you experts think?
Would one be able to pootle about in an RS, perhaps even get 50 to the gallon out of it, on a rare, 55 mph, inside lane motorway trip to my sister in laws? In effect, own an RS but drive it like a Jazz.

You might get 30mpg from a Focus RS. I assume you are talking about the one from 2004/5??

I'm actually referring to the current model bigjl. Ford claims 37 mpg overall!

I suspect the ride will be harsher than your current jazz. Why worry about MPG. You don't do many miles, so the difference in petrol costs will be negligible compared to the extra costs of maintenance/insurance/road tax for the RS.

I was looking at a car to use at weekends and worked out that as I'll only do 2-3k a year at most, a car that does 25mpg would only cost an extra £250 over one that does 50mpg.

You will get about 25mpg from the new RS, maybe just about hit 30 on the long run, but 50 would be impossible.


It will hold its value though as the MK1 and MK2 have done.

I had the use of a 2006 RS for a week a while ago, lovely car but I wouldn't own one.
Performance is impressive but, certainly where I live, there's nowhere to use it. A quick traffic light sprint perhaps, maybe a blast down a country lane now & again but to me that doesn't justify the increase in costs coming from owning one.


A Focus ST will do the same job in the real world & be cheaper to own but.... each to his own

Whats the point in getting a quick car and driving it slowly and economically?. If you want a toy buy a modern classic.

That's the trouble with old age, you can finally afford to buy & insure the sort of car you really wanted when you were 18, but if you buy one now, everybody laughs and points at you when you are in it.

I'm with Norman Castle, get yourself a Proper Car, something with a V8 and auto, Rover P5 or P6, Daimler 250 etc.
Make sure it is on free tax and classic low miles insurance, then the saved tax & insurance money will buy you enough petrol for a years motoring, and you get to drive around in a Proper Car that doesn't make you look like you are desperately hanging onto youth.
