is this a private small family run car hire company, or part of a larger group or chain?

Either which way the £66 is excessive, the normal cost is around 30, and even then the advice is normally to challenge that and reclaim it.

As an educated guess, I'd say this is an independent franchise operating under a global brand name.

I may be wrong, but the initials G M spring to mind.

They will lease their rental stock from another company, so any penalty charges and fines are first processed by the Registered Keeper, passed to the rental company, who will then add their admin fee to it. If it is GM, then the fines team is detached from the rental branch.

Loyalty is fine and dandy, but when one party takes advantage and tries to rip off the other party, that party should re-evaluate the situation.

Be clear on one thing - this is to do with your contract with the car hire firm and NOTHING to do with the hotel or Parking Eye (as much as we'd like to get one over on PE) unless caused by their negligence. If I was the hotelier, unless you could prove that I was negligent and that led to a charge incurred to my customer I would *not* want to pay the £66. If the original PCN was issued because you didn't enter your car details at the right time, that's not the responsibility of the hotel. If however you were able to enter your details at any time up to departure then it *is* their fault if you met their terms and conditions for parking.

Do you see the distinction? A party can only be held responsible for actions it undertook, not the actions of a third party, otherwise we'd all be suing Lyons Tea Rooms for slugs in Schweppes Ginger Beer bottles.

I would say that any hotel (or anywhere for that matter) who agrees to get someone like PE in, and in addition imposes some ridiculous piece of bureaucracy into the process IS negligent, and deserves all the ridicule, flak and opprobrium that's coming to them.

To the OP, you look like a bit of a pushover from what you've said, giving far too much benefit of the doubt to those who are supposed to be providing you with a service. You won't criticise the hotel, despite some bad experiences (not just the parking). You won't criticise the car hire company who are trying to rip you off. You are a PPC's dream "customer"!

Couldn't agree more. But that's beside the point.

Alternatively I'm trying to help the OP focus his actions where they matter. If the hotel did something wrong according to its procedures, by all means complain to them and asked for compensation for their mistake. If however the OP was at fault (not registering his vehicle with the hotel when he should have) then why should the hotel pay for his mistake? Best in these circumstances to complain to the car hire firm in the manner outlined by others above.

THAT... Makes a lot of sense, especially the second paragraph.

To be honest, I have no doubt whatsoever that the rental company would drop the charge at the drop of a hat - without even asking for proof from the hotel, I'm certain they would take my word for it, we really do have an exceptionally good relationship.

I was really hoping that those despicable "chancers" at Parking Eye would get a good roasting over this - a company that truly deserves it in my opinion (I've previously received one of those speculative invoices for having too long a nap in the car at a motorway services) but the above post makes it clear to me that's not on the cards.

I'll contact the car rental company today and let you know how it goes, in the meantime, I'd like to thank everyone for their valuable input - this really is a very friendly community with a wealth of good advice and opinions... Thank you!

  • Just a quick update to say thank you to everyone again, and to let you know that I have received a full refund from the car hire company for this charge.
