Hi,
I need a patio (2.5 m by 5 meter) in my back garden however i have an issue with surface water. it is very difficult and expensive to connect to the existing drainage system hence looking for some alternative solutions.
We also would like to avoid decks as they can be very slippers. So need some advice..
thanks

thanks but this is based on soakaway and we are not allowed in our part of country due to soil structure. Local borough told me that anything with soakaways is not an option.0

soakaways are the only alternative solution to the main drain............0

The only alternative I can think of is to rectify the cause of the surface water. If it's simply a high water table then you're a bit snookered really. But if it's down to compacted clay subsoil then you could dig it out, incorporate lots of gravel to improve the drainage, and re-lay it. Not a small task, and could well end up being more expensive than running it into the main drains ( although, even having said that, you're not really supposed to run surface water into the foul-water drainage system ).0

Surface waster is due to rain only. I do not want a pool on patio due to rain, or have some problems with stones later on. but existing drainage it too far to connect so lots of cost.0

Is the patio covering the whole garden, or just part of it? The surface water problem is where? Just on the patio?
Normally the patio would just have a gentle angle so water runs off onto the lawn. If you don't want it running onto the lawn you can have a border between the patio and the lawn so the water runs into that and keep the flowers watered.0 -
Lay it level with a decent fall on it and surface water shouldn't be a problem.0

I am concerned about the surface water on patio which is 15 m2. I have another 40 M2 garden however garden level is 40 cm above patio level.0

If the garden isn't flooding now I wouldn't be concerned about the patio.0

I had a problem with flooding a while ago. The lawn (which has a slight slope) would get saturated after days of heavy rain, water would collect in a bare soil area between the lawn and patio, overflow and cascade its muddy water into the pond.
After having advice about a 'French drain' - I dug down - maybe two feet - in the 'soil area, took as much clay out as I could, put a layer of bark chippings, then compost - no problems since.I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0
