Pulled pork.

Options
Just wondered if anyone could tell me how to cook pulled pork in the slow cooker? Do you put any liquid in it? Thanks.

  • I always put o few inches of water in plus I add chopped or powdered garlic, salt and pepper. You could also add a quartered onion if you like that flavor. I use half for pulled pork and half for a Mexican recipe so I don't add onion at that time.
Overprepare, then go with the flow.

I lightly spray the sides with oil (I use frylight) to prevent sticking. I then put a layer of sliced onions on the bottom. Pork goes on top of the onions and then I pour over enough bbq to coat but not submerge the meat.

When cooked take meat out to 'pull' using 2 forks and discarding any fat/bones. Then return the pulled meat to mix in with the onions and juices from the meat and sauce. I usually get the accompaniments we're having it with at this point, turning my sc to the warm setting. When ready, serve.

I never use water, as the onion/pork/sauce produces enough liquid

I do it a bit differently. I take a piece of pork shoulder (aldi - costs about £3-odd) and about a third of the Bramwell BBQ sweet and spicy sauce and some pop (any kind) about half a mug, and put in half a teaspoon of smoked paprika, same of salt and ground black pepper, a good tablespoon of brown sugar. cook on high for an hour then on low for six to seven hours. after three hours (or so) I turn the meat.
sometimes it comes out with a rich thick sticky sauce - but it can be a bit thin sometimes for some strange reason. in which case I just pour it off and use it as 'dipping' sauce! I just 'pull' the pork with forks and return to slow cooker - mine has a 'keep warm' function. if yours hasn't I would just keep it on low until you want it with some of the sauce. then keep warm for however long you want or on low heat for about half hour I would guess.
tbh - this recipe is one which YOU tweak! I love the sweetness and mild spicyness of this. you may prefer a more tangy one - in which case add chillies. or peppers and onions etc.
I have never used water either - I think every ingredient should add flavour.

Schwartz do a slow cooker pulled pork packet sauce. I used it last time and there were good results.
I know it's not OS and it has additives, but I wanted something tried and tested and it was on offer. Excuses Excuses.
  • I marinade my pork overnight in a bbq sauce rub.
Then sling it in the slow cooker and pour a couple of tablespoons of Chipotle sauce over it for a mild kick.
Then ignore it till it is time to eat :)
  • I buy a boneless shoulder joint from Lidl for about £3.50. I seal it in a frying pan then put it in the slow cooker with onion, carrots and any other left over bits of veg, and some apple juice/ water, and leave it for 8-10 hours. When taken out I pull it apart with two forks; it's astonishing how much meat you get! Then I put the stick blender in the juices to make a lovely gravy. I always make loads of gravy, some in a jug for the next day and some in the freezer for when we have sausage and mash. Day 2 is more pork, either with mash, veg and gravy, or in bread rolls with a bit of gravy and some apple sauce. Day 3 it's shredded pork, finely sliced cabbage, carrots, peppers, onions, noodles and sweet chilli sauce and a bit of soy sauce stir fried. DH loves the roast dinner and the mash dinner, and I could eat the stir fry every day!
BTW, I like to cook things in apple juice so I buy the individual cartons from Lidl, 5 for 99p I think, so I don't end up throwing any away.

Step one. Buy a smallholding where the owners have left you three very old arthritic pigs. Step two. Send, the only two you can get into the trailer, to the abotour. Cook a joint of this ancient meat for at least two days in the slow cooker. You now have, just about edible, pulled pork. Repeat almost every day for a year. Don't like wasting food and, having just moved, had almost no money. Don't eat pulled pork now! M2m.
