If the OP Is completely unable to cope in anyway, Then I suggest the mother becomes power of attorney and deal with their affairs.

And am not sure who the OP is sending letters to about the assessment but it shouldn't be DWP. If you need to contact people about ESA assessments you call centre for health and disability assessments
  • My daughter is the same as you. She hasnt been out on her own for nearly 3 years now and finds it hard to talk to anyone and going to the jobcentre or making a phonecall is totally out of the question. She did have a little pet sitting business going where I spoke to all of the clients and did all the bookings and she did the actual pet care but even that is a struggle now. Once you do get through to ESA you can set it up so that your mum can speak about you on your behalf. All you need to do is at the start of each phonecall they will ask your mum to put you on the phone and they will say "do you authorise your mum to speak on your behalf?" and you just say "yes" and thats it.

You do have to keep getting fit notes until the result of your assessment has come through which is a right pain and I'm sure doctors have got better things they could be doing. My daughters took about 7 months!!!!

You should only have to go through the process detailed above once, not every time you call. Ask the person at ESA to put a note on the system to say that you want them to speak to your mother. As long as she can answer all the security questions OK there shouldn't be a problem.

I can understand people who can't call DWP because they simply cannot talk... I understand having mental health issues and being shy or not knowing what to say. But the fact is, People with mental health issues can get better and are suppose to try and help themselves get better.. My Brother has severe autism and he still manages to make the odd call when he really needs to, Even though he complains he can't do it.

My son is 19 & has autism.... although he could ring a number... he wouldnt have a clue what to say or understand what they were saying to him!.... classic example, i rang the bank on his behalf, but i only had authority in the branch, it wasnt set up for online banking, they insisted they speak to him, i explained his autism & he wouldnt understand, but i put him on anyway... they asked his name, he told them it... they asked date of birth, he looked puzzled, i told him "your birthday". the guy said i cant prompt him... they asked "mothers maiden name" & he hadnt got a clue what that meant or what it was... so we couldnt proceed.... hence why I & other people have to ring on behalf of others with mental health issues
