Anyone dealt with online car buyers for cheap 2nd hand car?

I'm selling an 2001 VW Polo for someone and have been looking at webuyanycar.com, wewantanycar.com and so forth as I don't have the time or energy to trawl around second hand car dealers - the car no longer has a tax disc and the insurance is about to expire. Most of the reviews I've read seem to suggest they rip you off one way or another so I wondered if anyone on MSE has used one of these companies and been treated fairly.

Also, does anyone know of any comparison sites for this type of thing? I haven't been able to find one as yet.

I would be surprised if those companies are actually interested in a 2001polo , probably get the "ring us on 08rippoff" to get a price

put it on ebay with a 99 p starting price ,

It's not worth the admin for the car buying companies on a £500 car. Simplest solution would be to put it into a local auction. If sold as 'all good' with a long MOT, it should attract some bids and sell. Have a chat with the auctioneer to get their opinion.

Classified advert on ebay, £14.99 for 30 days. £500 or best offer. Put as much detail as you can and take a load of photos.

Or drive it to a scrap yard and sell it to them for £50.

Neither do any cars these days :)

Ebay, as suggested above, is a good idea. So is Gumtree - in some ways it may be better than ebay as it'll tend to attract local buyers, and it's free to advertise. Just advertise it honestly ( i.e. don't describe it as "perfect in every way" if it's not ), put a sensible asking price ( the Parkers website, or many others, will give you a ballpark figure for free ), and you'll get someone to buy it without any major hassle.

The problem we have is that the car isn't taxed so no-one could test drive it. It would also mean faffing around with cash or getting a banker's draft. As I write, I've also just realised that I can't drive it to a car depot or dealer either. All a bit of a mess really :(

I had a ford focus , mot ran out bad dent on door needed a few things for MOT inc scratch on windscreen , we buy etc did not want , scrap was £55 so stuck it on gumtree with a good description (no mot) and photos

lots of TXT messages asking how much MOT (?) and asking how many doors(?)

in the end I said voice calls only , blew a few off and got £120 within a week

It's amazing how few people actually read ads, Pappa Golf!!

Do you think I could advertise it, with photos etc and no test drive? It's a clean, tidy car with very low mileage, fsh etc.

yes! however I found a lot of interest in the first day then it went dead , as if it had disappeared , cancel sale and relist every few days to keep on top , do not pay for any extra,s

no second hand car has got tax on it when sold , do not even mention ved

as for road tests , tell them that your insurance has been moved to another car , they will have to show you a policy that allows other cars WITHOUT you having a policy

Thanks for the tips, pappa golf. I've got nothing to lose by giving it a go!
