The supplier suggested we do this (and the fitters cover all costs)
Why on earth would the fitters cover the cost of it?

That is exactly what I said! The fitters have been absolutely amazing but expecting them to come back on another day, in 3 weeks time, for free, is ridiculous.

You could buy a camping stove and use that for 3 weeks while waiting for the job to be finished.

Single burner stoves start at about £10/12. That would probably be a lot cheaper than asking your fitters to fit your hob temporarily.

I have had a similar problem in the past which is why I always use a company which can both supply and fit so that if there is a problem they need to sort it at their expense (unless a family member is doing the fitting in which case I will use supply only).

If you do as you did then you have to pay for any extra fitting costs if things go wrong with the supply.

I know and we wanted to use their fitters, but unfortunately we needed building work, a load of electrical stuff doing, and significant plumbing work before fitting, and the company we were getting the kitchen from couldn't supply fitters who could do all that. Using their fitters just for the dry fit and sourcing all the other trades separately would have been a much bigger pain than having to replace one run of worktop and a cupboard at a later date!

We could do with a camping stove anyway so this might be a good excuse to get some new gear and sort a camping trip.
