Carpet underlay

I've got an ancient persian rug that I've used instead of carpet in a bedroom. The bedroom is in the process of being renovated (wiring and plumbing are done, loft insulation has been put between floor and ceiling, the floorboards have been cleaned/sanded and relaid, the new skirting is on, undercoat is on the wood and the first coat of paint is on the walls.
The old underlay was starting to crumble and had odd holes in it. As it was ancient, this isn't really an issue, but I thought that before putting the rather threadbare carpet back down I would treat it to some new underlay. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations as to what type of underlay would be most appropriate.
(Oh... and if you can suggest the best way to clean and dry a 20ft x 12 ft rug I'm open to suggestions... the current option of dragging it across freshly mown grass isn't really going to have the desired effect as parts of it look pretty filthy...)

Wool felt underlay is excellent and very good value. It doesn't have a rubber backing either so no problem with it disintegrating over time.0

I've used the cheap underlay from B&Q without a problem on my landing, it's a bit springy.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

Yes! Can't hear the tumble dryer nearly as loudly upstairs as before.0 -
Did you use acoustic insulation or normal loft insulation?.0

normal loft insulation, as we were doing it for the thermal benefits rather than anything else. It's a cold house.0
