Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a question that crops up every time we play. Say you own the four stations, but one of them is mortgaged. If a player lands on one of your unmortgaged stations, do they pay you £100 ( as though you owned 3 stations ) or £200 ( as though you owned 4 )? Similarly, if you own a colour set but one of them is mortgaged, do you receive double rent on the unmortgaged ones because you own the whole set ? It's not clear in the rules.0

They pay you £100 as the other one is only counted when it is unmortgaged.0 -

But yes, I agree with the consensus.
She can do any deal she likes, with any player she likes, to get the cash to pay the rent.
If she can't raise enough and he won't do a deal then he gets everything she's got and she's out of the game. Including her token as a momento0 -

Thanks :T
As a slight aside, I remember reading somewhere that "house rules" are quite commonly used. These are rules that are not in the official rule-book, but are used quite widely. Two common ones are, you have to complete a circuit of the board before you're allowed to buy anything, and secondly, all fines, fees, house repair costs, etc., are placed onto the middle of the board. The first player to land on Free Parking scoops the lot. We use that last one, it actually makes it quite fun, as the "pot" can get pretty big, and a down-at-luck player can suddenly be the leader by scooping a large jackpot. It doesn't really matter as long as everyone agrees what the rules are going to be before the game starts - strict, "by-the-book" rules or an agreed set of house rules0 -

We play both those rules, and also have the kids and mom ganging up on me when I'm winning. :shocked:0 -
We have the rules placed under the board, so the person who needs to check, ends the game! We also have a cat, that is very good at demolishing hotels. It adds value to the game.
We also have my Tonka Die Cast bulldozer, with tracks. It comes in useful!
Also we have a time limit and cash up at that point!0 -
You have to have well defined house rules otherwise it can be very messy. I used to play a lot with my 4 brothers (2 older and 2 younger) when we were younger, and the games used to almost always end up with arguing, so we had house rules to deal with most of the common ones.
For this scenario, we said that if you couldn't pay your rent in full, you had to hand over all your assets to the bank and the bank gave the mortgaged value of the properties plus any houses or hotels value, to the player who was owed the money. Any properties would then be available to buy to the remaining players as per the normal rules of the game, who would have to un-mortgage them when purchased. Unfortunately, whilst I agree that you were diddled based on the rules we play, I don't think you can argue against the game rules.
We also used to play the once round the board rule, plus free parking. Another common argument was about being in Jail. The rules say you can throw the dice on three goes, to try and get a double to get out of jail free, or pay £50. We were never clear on whether if you threw a double, that was your move, or throwing a double allowed you to take a further move, and did you have to pay the £50 after your third throw, or would it technically be your fourth turn when you pay the £50. We settled on paying straight after your third attempt and moving to Just Visiting until your next turn. If you threw a double, that was your move.
I'm now in my 40's, but unfortunately the grandkids have taken to liking Monopoly, but it goes against the grain for me to play nice when it comes to Monopoly, having played with 4 brothers for so long (we played hard ball to say the least). They live in the midlands, so they play their house rules at their house, and our rules at our house.0 -

Though what I prefer is to start from an uneven position (e.g. no queen in chess, £1000 starting money rather than £1500 in Monopoly) and then play my best to win from there.0 -
RE. throwing a double to get out of jail, we have always understood it to be:-
The double releases you from jail, then you throw again to move (same rules for 3 doubles in a row apply).
You have to pay before throwing, so pay up at the start of your fourth go, if still in jail.
Not receiving rent whilst in jail is another rule I've seen played.0 -
My rules
Can't buy until you been round the board once
No free parking money
No receiving rent while in Jail
If you can't pay rent, all your properties go back to the bank.
No auctions
No double money for landing on Go.
In jail if you roll a double, you move according to the double, but if you have to pay the £50, then you re roll the dice.
Of course 3 doubles in a row means go straight to jail.
And finally, the most important rule: I AM ALWAYS THE CAR! NOBODY ELSE IS ALLOWED THE CAR!!!0
