Software to auto back up onto external hard disk?

Had a scare recently when my HD reported imminent failure. Fortunately local pc support was able to come round and back it all up and then copy it onto a new HD before that happened.
I had been backing up my data onto an external HD here regularly but now feel the need for an auto back up to ensure all the back up data is up to date. I am running windows 7 Pro but the back up/restore option on that does not appear to work and in any case, I would prefer to back up onto an external HD.
Is there any software out there that does that?

MS Synctoy https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=15155
It's old but is still a very good free simple backup tool for data0 -
Just to clarify, when you require "auto back up" is that:-littlerock wrote: »but now feel the need for an auto back up to ensure all the back up data is up to date. I am running windows 7 Pro
1. to automatically backup data files in real-time without you doing anything
2. to automatically backup at regular intervals (e.g. every day)
The former is tricky - File History in Windows 10 tries to do it;
The latter - lots of options. Surprised you cannot do this with 7Pro.
Try:- EaseUS Todo Backup Free
Macrium Reflect Free
Paragon's free backup0 -
I use SyncToy (post #3) ... it's not automatic in itself but you can setup a scheduled task in Windows to automate it.0
