A bit of a pickle!

Hi everyone!
In August, 2013, I went travelling. I was banking with Santander at the time.
I returned recently and I was checking my credit record to find out I owe Santander £700+. I rang them up asking why and they've explained I didn't cancel a direct debit.
From August 2013 to January 2014 (in January my mail was returned), I was receiving bank charges as this company was continuously trying to take the payment.
The £700+ has been referred to a collection agency. When I rang Santander, they said they weren't able to help because it's no longer in their hands.
I know I made a mistakes:
-Should have cancelled the account
-Perhaps informed Santander I was leaving prior
-Checked I had no financial commitments
My question is: am I eligible to claim back these charges? If it was money owed, I'd have no qualms paying, but the entire amount if simply bank charges.
Thanks everyone!
Edit: sorry if this is the wrong forum

Unlikely. You may get some goodwill, or you may be able to agree a settlement fee if the debt has been sold.0
