Is the account still active and operating normally? If yes, keep using the card, make good repayments and ensure that from now on conduct of the account remains perfect. The effect of the isolated missed payment will diminish quite quickly assuming everything else on the cardholders credit files remains spotless.

They panicked when they received a demand for payment and settled over the phone.

They cancelled the credit card and no longer has one. I think it will be difficult to get another credit card due to a default on the file.

Change broker. There are options in the market for such circumstances. Though perhaps not through the mainstream lenders.

Best thing would be to write to cap one explaining situation and ask them to reconsider the default or stop reporting the card to CRA difficult but not impossible, if they refuse you could complaint FOS although if the default was reported fairly they could not force capital one to remove it, there are some instances where as a good will gesture banks will at this point comply with your request.
