Second-hand BAXI boiler

Hi all,
Have a horrible old-fashioned BAXI fire that we want to replace but can't get a nice one without replacing the boiler. Have seen on ebay a few of the nicer firefronts with working boilers. Just wanted to check about the regulations regarding second hand boilers and fires - is it legal and can we get a CORGI to do it?
Thanks
Matt

Thanks for that Canucklehead, much appreciated.
Follow-up question to that, if you say your OH wouldn't fit a 2nd hand one, would you consider any CORGI that did to be a bit dodgy? Don't wanna get a cowboy in and endanger ourselves!
What do any other MSEs think?0 -
Good afternoon: My OH doesn't want to chance a boiler fault or , more importantly, gas safety issues...but you will find some CORGIs will install the second hand gear no questions asked:eek:

Just like to make a couple of points.1st-it is legal to fit secondhand gear but have to be fitted by a corgi fitter.2nd-it is now illegal to fit any boiler(secondhand or new)which isn't a condensing one.Any gas appliance which is fitted has now to be registered with corgi-this also includes secondhand. There is a points system which would allow a non-condensing boiler to be fitted but thats almost impossible to achieve0

A second hand compatible fire would be ok to fit to a Baxi back boiler.
Only central heating is covered by Energy Efficiency Regs. The fire in front doesnt count.
You are of course buying obsolecence, as Baxi have discontinued their BBU range as they couldnt get efficiency levels high enough to comply.
It would be completely above board for a qualified and registered installer to do this job as they would have to perform EXACTLY the same safety checks as they would for a brand new appliance.
Before they could start the job, they would need a FULL SET of installers and users instructions for the appliance.
Of course after installing, if they found a problem, then they would have to label appliance unsafe and turn off /disconnect as appropriate to the fault. Unless blatently obvious, this is not always possible to tell visually before starting the job.
You are therefor taking a gamble, buying second hand as Im pretty sure the installer would still want paid for his labour.0 -
Good morning: The majority of the points raised by the previous two posters are discussed in the CORGI technical document for which I posted a link in a previous post. For more information on the installation and specification of gas central heating systems please refer to the Energy Saving Trust document http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/uploads/documents/housingbuildings/ce30.pdf Other relevant reference documents (for England and Wales) include the Domestic Heating Compliance Guide http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_PTL_DOMHEAT.pdf
as well as Part J Building Regulations http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/uploads/br/BR_PDF_ADJ_2002.pdf
The Planning Portal is an excellent website with details on most things related to building works, and as you would expect, planning
