    Sketty is a really nice area but house prices reflect that. As already noted Uplands is packed with students and student housing - but great for the night life. Terrible parking issues in the area.

    Neath...longer commute (traffic can be really bad into Swansea) - like all areas has some really nice parts and really bad parts. Cheaper than Swansea though. I live in Pontardawe, easy for Swansea and actually surprisingly nice (only been there a few months) but I was very careful where I bought.

    I looked at houses in Morriston but you have to be very careful where you buy there, some rough areas - but this is pretty much the same for all areas of Swansea. Llansamlet is okay, very dense, lots of traffic and the usual trouble spots. I'd plain avoid Skewen/Birchgrove/Town Hill (though some of the more rural areas of Birchgrove can be okay.

    Given how much diversity there is in Swansea I'd echo the advice to rent first. Actually - the marina is a very nice area, but the apartments are tiny.

    Hi everyone,

    I have gone through the forums on anything and everything Swansea related and need some help please.

    I'll be a mature (36 years young) medical student in swansea and am looking at places to buy. Looking to commute between Singleton, Port Talbot and Morriston Hospitals with a budget of 100K.

    I saw some places in Neath which seem to be crazy cheap (like 55K) but not knowing the area at all - it ofcourse makes me wonder if the price is low due a reason I dont understand :)

    So far the very affordable houses I've found are in;

    - Neath - Cimla / Tai Bank (Tonna)
    - Morriston (Pleasent Street / Parc Avanue / Caemawr Rd.)

    As I have limited time to spend in Swansea before hand I'm just scouring the web for a short list of places that I think will be suitable - using crime maps and internet to see what people say - but I have very little and mixed info on Morriston and Neath as areas.

    I'll be working unsociable hours so safety and quietness is important for me - I'll have a car so wont rely heavily on public transport.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    Thank you.
    I'm up in Abercrave (not from there originally) and the whle area around there (Ystraglynlais/Ystalyfera/ Glynneath) is pleasant and affordable. Neath wouldn't be my choice. Also not sure that I'd like around CwmTyrch or Seven Sisters.

    I'd also consider renting until we see what happens with Port Talbot steelworks - losing that site could easily devastate local housing prices. Maybe less of a concern for Swansea central but certainly outlying areas.

    Also consider Pontardawe, lovely valley village, links to M4, central to the hospitals. Not a huge village, but there's Tesco, Home Bargains, Argos, Farmfoods, plus wonderful local butchers and greengrocers. Plus of course 20 minutes into swansea city centre and all that that has to offer.
    I'm utterly biased as I moved here from Llanelli, but have lived all over the UK (Portsmouth, Plymouth, Helensburgh and others!) and I love how it can be as quiet as you want here, or as busy (great cycle / kayak / walking routes).
