Neighbour attaching fencing to my extension and garage

Hi all,

I just need some advice, I live on on a corner and my extension and garage back on to my neighbours garden and I have just seen he has attached fencing to both my extension and garage as well as hooks to my garage to hang up his washing.

I have also noticed he has also drilled in fencing to another persons garage as well.

He's a bit of a nutter so I'm not sure what I should do, i can't speak to him as he has threatens me in the past.

Any advice?

  • With previous experience around these parts & having read similar threads, i would say that during the life of this thread you will get many people telling you to just simply get on in life & that this wont kill you so ignore it & stop making something out of nothing.

But if it's a deal to you then stick with it, ignore those posts as in between all that there'll be some who will be able to advise you what to do :)

I want him to take it down or a least ask me. I would never do that to someone else's property so I don't think he should be allowed to either.

Indeed, and I might be one of them, but I'd need more details, just as anyone would in a real life situation, rather than just a hypothetical on the internet.

I would want to know, for example, if the affixing of these things is likely to prove damaging, or whether the garage is likely to remain unharmed. In that instance, it becomes a matter of bad manners.

Disputes can be costly in psychological terms, as well as when one comes to sell a house, so I'd say enter into them when they are genuinely worth it.

Edit: ....and disputes must be capable of being won.

If he's a bit of a nutter who's threatened you in the past, I doubt the latter will happen. As such, you're stuck with the former!

As mentioned, has he had to damage your garage?

My first step would be to speak to the neighbour who it also 'affects', to see if they feel affected or not.

    Then you have two options.

    - ignore it. If it's not doing any damage then so what?
    - take him to court. Could be costly and may have an impact if you try and sell later.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

Might be worth reading up on the party wall act to see where you stand. If the garage wall is on the boundary line it might be a party wall, so he could be well within his rights.

He managed to take out a massive chuck of the garage wall which belongs to my neighbour but has covered that up by drilling into his garage so he is able to put up fencing. And also you could only see it through my window. So I think he would know it was me.

I think I have decided to know down my garage as I don't use it and means I will have a massive garden and he won't be happy.

Though thanks for all your advice.

You think that knocking down your garage will cause unhappiness?

I think it more likely that your neighbour will say "Ho-hum," and do whatever's necessary to retain his fence. He might even do something radical, like buy a whirly line.

I haven't seen your garage, but I'd imagine if it's worth worrying about in the first place, it has a value.

Therefore, de-valuing your own property doesn't seem like the best of ideas to me.
