Hi, I have a Carrera Subway One hybrid bike and have tried to get to the bottom of an annoying feeling when I ride it.
All I can do is try to explain that it doesnt make a noise but it feels grindy ?!? and also gears 7 and 8 slip a lot. Apart from that the front gears work ok and 1 to 6 on the back change fine.
Also last month I changed the rear cassette and chain, and put a new gear cable on. Im using mucoff wet lube as a lubricant.
So has anyone any ideas as what would cause this feeling I get?
Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Old Faithful we roam the range together,
Old Faithful in any kind of weather,
When the round up days are over,
And the Boulevard’s white with clover,
For you old faithful pal of mine.

You fitted a new chain and cassette. Was the old one heavily worn?0 -
Yes they was quite worn, the cassette was around 2000 miles and the chain I guess around 500 miles old.Old Faithful we roam the range together,

A couple of things to try because I had a similar sort of rubbing and slipping on a few rear cogs. Make sure the chain is not too long.I took a link pair out ( that is 2 links ) using a chain link remover to cure mine. My rear derailleur was nt putting any spring tension on the chain when on the high gears(smallest sprockets )..Also make sure the front derailleur is adjusted so the cage does nt drag slightly against the chain. The cable tension is important too, not too tight or slack. Other possibility is a bottom bracket bearing fault. I ve had a broken bearing holder transmit the same sort of slight grind on pedaling.
Does the grinding sensation stay when you are freewheeling ?0 -

Grindy...? Could be grit in the bottom bracket or pedal spindles...?...and also gears 7 and 8 slip a lot... and 1 to 6 on the back change fine.
That sounds like your d!railleur hanger is bent. Definitely worth getting a hanger alignment tool to fix it. You could just replace the hanger, but I reckon it's worth having the tool. A new hanger might not be perfectly aligned anyway.0 -
Thanks for all the replies, I guess I might just go the whole hog and replace my rear hanger and derailleur. After a year I suppose it will need replacing and at least I know its done.Old Faithful we roam the range together,

I'd leave the derailleur - just give it a good clean and a lube and it should be fine. Its worth changing the hanger as they're only a few quid. Sounds to me like you need to look at the pedals and bottom bracket for the grinding feel.0 -
The Altus rear mech those bikes are fitted with are pretty low end jobs. I would hake this opportunity to upgrade it.0

No point replacing the derailleur unless it's damaged or you want an upgrade. If I were you, I'd get either a new hanger or (ideally) a hanger alignment tool and check that before replacing the derailleur itself.0 -
I checked the hanger today, asked a friend of a friend and its ok. Bit at a loss really now, might replace the bottom bracket but thats beyond my level of expertise.Old Faithful we roam the range together,
