Renting furniture to yourself

  • The furniture was expensive to buy - £600 armchairs, that kind of thing - but second-hand furniture, even brand new and usnused, has basically nil value.

Always assuming that furniture can legally be left in a let property - fire regs are much stricter than for furniture supplied by the occupier.

It's all new stuff, with all the safety labels.

It's going to the skip otherwise, so it seemed worth inquiring if there's a way to monetise it somehow.

'Going to the skip' suggests that it isn't of value.

How about an in between solution? ie sell it or give to a charity?

    Yes, there is.

Sell it at a local auction or in the local paper.

Or give it to a charity, and let them sell it. There are local furniture recycling charities across the country, most of whom can collect. If it's good, it can be sold straight away. If it needs work, they usually refurbish in conjunction with charities who work with people with mental ill-health or learning disabilities or otherwise needing support. And the furniture's often bought by those on low incomes. Win all round.

...or you could just chuck it in landfill...

There are plenty of people on here who don't agree with people receiving inheritances as it is 'unfair' and would like to impose 100% tax on them.

I expect these are people who are not expecting an inheritance. :)

FWIW, although I have never felt that way about inheritances, I received an absolutely unexpected sizeable inheritance last year. I did not have a clue it was going to happen. So you never know - it may still happen to those who think they are not due anything. I wonder if these people would still be quite so happy with 100% tax rate then? :)

Sorry to go OT and I hope the OP gets the advice they need, seems very complicated to me. I would just replace the furniture when it needed it, or sell it and rent the place unfurnished).

I haven't got a problem with people inheriting money, I do have a problem with people trying to avoid paying tax, through this elaborate scheme, though...

IME the Red Cross will likely come and take it away for you if its newish with safety labels.
  • The British Heart Foundation will also collect furniture for sale in their shops, and electrical goods.

The Red Cross and the BHF can make a reasonable sum from these goods, and put it to good use.

It'll be less hassle for OP if he gets rid of the stuff. High end rentals tend to come unfurnished.

Mmmm. I've long found it an odd quirk of this forum that money saving is considered a great thing if you don't have much of it, but poor form if you have plenty.

Personally, I think it's poor form to engage in dodgy/borderline illegal activities in the name of 'being MSE', regardless of how much money you have.
