That's got an overdraft, but I specifically don't want one. I want spending to literally stop when the account is empty

Have edited my post, TSB you can choose if you want an OD.

Eh? No, I don't want an overdraft :) I absolutely, definitely, don't want one, which is the entire reason for this post.

Sorry, perhaps I'm being a bit daft, but if I've got money in my account, and a debit card, why does the terminal not allow the transaction from one of these basic accounts?
Well, based in my experience of PaP, I first insert a card and enter the PIN, i.e. authorise unspecified amount, then take the card out and fill the card. How big the balance is supposed to be for an unspecified amount to be authorised? How does the terminal know that you fill one car, not two or a van with 1000L cistern in the boot?

I understand that, but how does ANY card work then?
    Overdrafts have limits.
I'm just trying to understand exactly what it is that determines why a basic account debit card wont work at PaP.

I said you can choose if you want an OD at TSB, there's a question that says do you want an OD, you choose yes or no, simples.

Do TCB guarantee that you can't get overdrawn if you opt for no (£0) agreed overdraft?

Have no idea, I've never entered mine.

The OP should ask TSB that question.

It works because it can be overdrawn.
    Overdrafts have limits.
    Agreed overdrafts only.

Because the amount is unknown and the account can't be overdrawn. I think it's pretty obvious.

Well, in this case, if the OP is capable himself of avoiding getting overdrawn, it's much better to have an agreed overdraft and simply not use it than not to have it at all.

Agreed limit will be for accidental overspend only that will cost much less than without an agreed overdraft.

But how does the terminal know anything about my overdraft or lack of one?

Tesco current account - the website says:
Overdraft Control allows you to decide whether a payment is made when you don't have enough money in your account to cover it.

    If you HAVE overdraft control

    * We'll usually not make a payment, which would create or increase an unarranged overdraft, and you'll be charged an unpaid transaction fee.

    * There are some payments we'll have to make, for example Contactless debit card payments. In these cases, you'll be charged a fee and you'll also pay interest on the unarranged overdraft.

If you DON'T HAVE overdraft control

    * We may make payments when you don't have enough money in your account. You'll be charged a fee and you'll also pay interest on the unarranged overdraft.

    * If we don't make the payment, you'll be charged an unpaid transaction fee.

Er, so "allows you to decide whether a payment is made when you don't have enough money"
But also "you'll be charged an unpaid transaction fee".
Riiiight...so I chose to not allow payments when I don't have the money, and they charge a fee for that???
