    This seems rather high.

The previous owners of our property had a cable run from the 11kv pole/transformer in the field to a barn, approximately 70m distant, all of it in 'soft earth.'

Are you saying that would cost £70k in today's money?

There are some cables on pylons, over half a mile (possibly a mile) from us and on calm summer evenings we can hear the buzzing. It must be really loud for the houses on a newish estate, right next to them.

I'm just boggling at how you think the cables will be moved if you ask nicely.

Although there is a lot of talk about moving the cables, to be fair to the OP he never asked about moving them.
He only asked about cancelling, breaching and ignoring the covenants.

You are missing a couple of zeros. I pay £1000 a metre for digging a shallow trench for cables in soft earth and £3000 if the trench is through a hard surface like concrete. This is for data cables, HV will require even more cost.

You need to find a new contractor!

There's no way i'd accept those rates. I can get a very good 2 man gang with plant provided for £600 per day.

I would never choose to live near overhead high voltage power cables.

It's not that they are so ugly, I have serious concerns about physical and mental health conditions which may be caused by living in such close proximity to these cables. There have been reports about higher risks of pregnant women having miscarriages, childhood cancers (leukemia), depression, anxiety and sleep disorders....just google it.

On the other hand the power companies refute these reports and state that the risk is minimal....

As other posters on this thread have stated, if you go ahead and buy this property it may be very difficult to find a buyer for it if and when you do want to sell it in the future, it could be languishing on an estate agency books for years.

To be fair, it isn't just the power companies refuting - it is hundreds of scientific papers, most of which don't find much evidence of harmful effects.

I agree that it could cause problems selling - perception is (almost) everything.
