Thanks

I have no idea what you are talking about personally and a google search didn't help. I think you'll need to explain what you are talking about a little more fully.

What does Supporting People do for the person in question?

I don't understand the reference to increasing pension credit.

I've never heard of it but when I looked on Google, I found a link to several sites that mention it but don't know if it's the scheme you mean.

    NI - Supporting People

    Wales - Supporting People

But...the website for Supporting People no longer works

The Supporting People programme was launched in 2003 as a £1.8 billion ring fenced grant to local authorities intended to fund services to help vulnerable people live independently.

The level of the grant was reduced in subsequent years, and in the 2010 Spending Review the Government announced that the Supporting People national funding levels would decrease from £1.64 billion in 2010/11 to £1.59 billion in 2014/15.

In 2009, the ring fence was removed from the grant thereby allowing all local authorities to spend their Supporting People allocation as they deemed appropriate. Concerns have been voiced that local authorities are using their Supporting People grant to fund other expenditure – across 152 local authorities, Supporting People funding had been withdrawn entirely from 305 services, and reduced for a further 685 services according to media reports.

The Housing Minister, Grant Shapps, has written to local authorities to remind them of the value of Supporting People spending. In an assessment undertaken for the Department for Communities and Local Government in 2009, CapGemini calculated that the net financial benefits of the programme were £3.41 billion.

From other links such as Haringey - Supporting People Programme..I think it's now referred to as Housing Related Support.

Thank you all so much for the replies.
The Supporting People used to pay for the alarm service at my brothers home, so now he has got to pay for it himself. As far as I know the government stopped SP. This leaves my brother about £5 a week worse off. I just wondered if, because his income has now reduced, the pension credit might rise to replace it. He doesn't have a full state pension, (because when he was left to bring up his children 25 yrs ago no one told him he could claim credits for that time), and he finds life hard financially.

All these things such as tenancy support is all dealt with local authority, Not the government.

Normally to get free alarms or other security installed you need to be referred by say the police or a charity etc.
  • Once upon a time Housing Benefit paid the Supporting People element of rent but they then changed it in 2003 so Housing Benefit paid the rent and Social Services paid the Supporting People element (a simple way to claim Housing Benefit expenditure was cut and Social Services spending increased). Since then the grant has been cut and these cuts have been passed onto the tenants. You would need to contact your Local Authority - whatever Department deals with Supporting People payments.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.
