Gaming Laptops

I am looking to change my laptop and am looking at a gaming laptop this time. Can anyone with any experience of gaming laptops help me out with some recommendations as this area is new to me.

I have been looking at an ASUS ROG GL75 17.3" but I haven't been able to find any reviews of it, which I assume as it is a new model? I am a bit reluctant to spend £1200 on a machine that I can't reviews of!

As well as using the laptop for gaming I also run a lot of work related programmes through MS Office so it needs to be able handle those well and also be good for watching Blu Ray/DVD on.

Thanks in advance;)

  • 3Kg?! I hope you're not going to be carrying it around often.

At that spec I'd expect it to handle what you're asking without much issue.

My only concerns with 'gaming' laptops are limited GPU specs. The 1Tb HDD has a 7,200rpm spin speed, so the same as your average desktop.I'd personally want a bigger SSD for that price, there's barely enough room for the O/S, Office and a couple of recent games.

Are you refer to curry/ PCW £1200 Asus ROG GL75?
modle number is ASUS ROG GL752VW, not GL75
It is £970 at laptopsdirect/ saveonlaptops

Here is an alternative. Less RAM, cheaper, but with IPS screen...

If your budget is £1200, you should be able to find something with GTX970m.
    e.g. Gigabyte P57W, MSI GE72 6QF

I looked at the MSI and other ones but in the end I opted for the ASUS I originally saw, I did manage to save over £200 though by going with laptops direct and even managed some cash back from TopCashBackas well.

Looking forward to it arriving tomorrow now and it's a good step up in spec for me, so will hopefully it will tick all the boxes.

I know you have already bought it but i definitely wouldn't have got one with a 960m. I have a 970m and thats twice as powerful and that only just copes with all the latest games.

I think it will be fine for me, I enjoy my games on my laptop but I wouldn't describe myself as a hardcore gamer. I just like a machine that can cope with all that I throw at it work wise, with MS Office etc, most of my major games like COD I play on my Xbox One.

I know some people probably think it is a bit daft buying a gaming laptop and not using it to its full potential but it also allows me to get the best experience I can with all the other programmes I run.

It is day 3 since it arrived and I have to report it is fantastic so far, everything I want to do is so fast and speed is important to me. I like things instantly no lagging and it is good for that.

I could not believe how quickly it synced my dropbox files for example it took minutes whereas my Acer V3 772G took nearly 1 and a half hours!

I love the backlit keyboard and it is so quiet when running, the Acer was beginning to sound like a tank to be fair. The only thing I am trying to find out is if the mouse pad should be backlit or not, so if anyone can help me with that I would be grateful.

I am really pleased with it and glad I got it, I'm sure it will serve me well for the next couple of years, when it will be time to upgrade again. I also got a free backpack, gaming headset and gaming mouse in the box which was a bonus!

Thanks for all the advice guys I appreciate it if you know about the mousepad please can you let me know?

    Thanks again
    Simon
