I look at the holidaypirates site which is similar to MSE but posts holiday deals often found last minute. We found cheap flights and booked them about 6 weeks a go to Budapest in the July summer holidays and then just looked for an apartment (found on travel republic but booked direct as same price but got free tours and spa facilities by booking direct) and had found a discount code on holiday pirates to get cheaper airport transfers and airport parking. We coudl have used public transport but as four of us going it wasnt much more to book a private transfer.

Easyjet released there winter flights last week and there were some cheap flights for the October half term.

We went to Salzberg, Austria for a overnight stay one weekend in Dec (Christmas markets, lovely castle, Cathedral, ice skating) and it has a cheap bus service from the airport to the train station and lots of buses go to the market. Only about 20 min transfer time with two buses in total. Also went to another market in Germany with friends who all work in schools one weekend on a cheap eurostar and hotel 2 night deal.

I use this link to check flights and once I have found cheap ones start to look at hotels, transfers, what there is to do.

Ryanair usually has cheap flights to Knock in Ireland in the summer holidays and we hired a car and stayed at the Travelodge in Galway city (booked in a sale for cheap rates) and drove to Galway Bay, lakes and visited some of the places in the John Wayne film "The Quiet Man".

We went to Malta last year and although the flights were not as cheap as some other places, the hotels were cheap for half board or all inclusive, plus transport is cheap there. We booked the whole lot through travel republic so had a package deal (as they do low cost airlines). Then booked hotel and day cruises etc.
