Did You Miss Out on Your Dream Home but Bought a Better Dream Home?

Dream house for me was taken off the market when we tried to buy it. Absolutely gutted as it was just what we wanted and had the rarely available large plot.
Searched for another year, then Dream House #2 was mentioned. We knew we wanted it without even viewing as in our case we were only interested in location and plot size and it was twice the size of the first one and in a better location. We offered as much as we could but it was refused - husband decided it was worth more money, and was also then taken off the market. Even more gutted.
Continued looking while our buyer sat and waited too. 6 months later Dream House #2 came back to market for substantially higher than we could afford. But we had had 6 months to get organised. We had saved, begged and borrowed, sold everything that wasn't nailed down, and somehow, I don't know how, we managed to get it, despite a bidding war.
It's definitely a better house than the first one, but cost a lot more, as in between the market had gone mental, but we've done the right thing. Just need to keep paying it down now!!
So yes, you can find something better after falling in love with a house.
Having said all that, many properties that were ideal on paper were hovels when I got there, so I don't believe you can truly say its your dream house until you've visited it.0 -
30 years ago I viewed a house that I really thought was my dream home. Unfortunately it needed work which I couldn't afford so I never made an offer.
Since then I have seen it across a field hundreds of times from a road I regularly use and every time I glance over I feel a longing for it. Sometimes I go right past to have a peer in the gate!
However, if I had bought it I wouldn't have met my husband who moved in next door to the house I did buy.
(And he used to say "what's for you won't go by you" as well, but I'm not convinced myself.)0 -

We lost out on a couple but the one we got is definitely better than the others. It was sold STC but the sale fell through the week before exchange. We viewed it within 24 hours of it having fallen through.0

We've just been looking for a house for 2-3 months and have just sold ours and arranged a rented house to move into next week.
HOWEVER...
Our mortgage advisor called last week to say they'd up the loan amount, and from looking at sold prices there was an absolute dream house in the same village we live in sold last October. I know... this would be the case no matter what, we weren't ready to buy then etc. But this house is stupendous! I highly doubt another one like it will come along for a while.
BUT
I am trying to comfort myself with the knowledge that other houses will come up for sale and will be perhaps just as good in different ways! The problem is that there are about ten possible buyers for every good home that comes up for sale in my area just now so it could be cut throat!0 -
The house we really wanted was lovely, some things needed changing but oh we loved it. Our buyers were waiting to sell but unfortunately the house was sold.
Bought another house, needed far more work doing and 2 years later we're 3/4 of the way there. This house will be fabulous when done but I still dream of the other one!0
