Hi All
Some of you may be aware i'm on a DMP with payplan, just made my third payment. As you can see from my sig i'm in quite a bit of debt. You wouldn't believe this started as an original 5k loan only 4 years ago.
I still can't believe it really. I wish i never became a student. It hasn't got me a really decent job but enough of the moaning i'm hoping to do a PGCE next year so a well paid and more interesting job around the corner maybe?
The purpose of this post is to try and motivate me even more to reduce my debt as quickly as possible before i undertake this PGCE and in the long run completely get rid of it before i'm 30.
First bit of good news is i applied for a bar job a few months back but never heard anything about it. I got a call yesterday asking if i was still interested so i'm going to go for that to try and make a bit of a debt in my humungus debt!
It's going to be a struggle and i'll be glad when this year is over to be honest but i'm ready for the challenge...........! Ha!
Thanks for reading!

Lou - I don't know how well the bar job will pay (including tips) but this might be worth mentioning...
Most bar jobs pay close to minimum wage with enough tips to cover your bus fare or maybe a taxi - however, working in the right bar can up your income drastically.
I used to work in high end city centre bars. With the right attitude and approach in the right bar, taking home a tip jar with £100 in it is achievable.
One new year I used (and filled) a full size "Boston" style cocktail tin as my tip cup - almost everything in it was paper money and pound coins. (New year is fast approaching - being in the right bar for that night can make you a pretty penny)
Most typically though, if I took less than £20 tips in a night it had been a terrible night. A normal weekend shift would usually bring in between £50 and £80 tips.
Pulling pints is very unlikely to earn you that kind of money - you'll want to be in busy places, wine bars, cocktail bars and the likes. Before you apply - go in and ask the staff roughly how much they take in tips - if you've explained you're a bartender and are looking for a new place to work they might be more forthcoming with the info.
As a girl - doing table service in a good wine bar or cocktail bar can be a (relative) goldmine. A smartly dressed, well groomed, friendly bartender/waitress can stand to make good money when compared to minimum wage.
If you live anywhere with that kind of bar, I'd strongly recommend you try to get a job there. Even as a bar-back (stocking fridges, keeping the bartenders in glassware and so on) you stand to make more than you would pulling pints in your average local when the bartenders "tip out" their support staff at the end of the night. Get on the bar and you'll make even more.
Some of the very top bars can be a bit tough to get onto (not many bartenders are in a hurry to leave a job where they take in excess of £150 a night at weekends and sometimes not far off that midweek) but it is most definitely worth getting a job in a place like that as opposed to somewhere with a lower rate of custom and low expectations of the staff.Everything looks better from the seat of a bicycle.0 -

I have just started out with PayPlan as well. I have heard differing opinions of them, but mostly good. My experience has been good so far.
Good luck - you'll get there!0 -
You kept quiet about yesterday - so I wish you well with your DMP and a belated:Happy Birthday !! _party_ :bdaycake: _party_I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
