Seeking Natural Product to Colour Grey Hair

Can anyone advise of any natural cost-effective product that will effectively cover grey hair?
I've been using Herbatint, which is supposed to be largely natural, but my scalp reacts negatively.

Holland and Barret do a range called Naturtint. I've never tried it so can't say whether it's any good.

Narurtint is good, starts dark but then settles to the colour. You don't need to use all the solution. I have short hair and easily got four applications from one box also you can mix to make your own shade.
Did look into vegetable dyes, tried sage leaves ,made my hair smell of stuffing and made no difference in the colour, was going to try walnut but then decided to embrace the grey so glad I persevered as I love my silver. Refuse to be grey it's either silver platinum or pewter.
Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.
  • Thank you re Naturtint.
I am informed that it is actually the same product as Herbatint...?
It does work well, but as I said has led to some unwelcome scalp reactions (unlike the totally toxic products I was using for years previously!)
  • Thank you for the thought! I like the sound of silver platinum. I just wish it was easier to avoid!!!!

Have you tried henna hair dye by Lush. It covers my grey fine - although I don't have a lot. It can take a few goes to get the hang of it but I find it the best thing for my hair.

I ditched the dye six months ago and it was the best thing I've ever done. I had platinum highlights put though my hair last September, had a couple of cuts then had it done again at Christmas.

My hair looked "meant" IYKWIM all through the process. Not like growing out dye with nasty roots.

I have had it cut a couple of more times and all the old dye is gone. My natural colour is now a very attractive silver. I love it!
  • Thanks re Lush henna idea. I did get some success with this many years ago when the had far less grey (AKA platinum!). I used to leave it on for 9 hours back then to ensure coverage though. How long do you leave it on for?
  • I also tried Aubrey Organics henna last year, but it didn't do much. Maybe that needed a few more hours to achieve better result
  • It sounds amazing - maybe I'll take that route one day - probably not just yet though !
  • If you're having a reaction to any hairdye, you shouldn't use it anymore in case you have a massive allergic reaction next time.

Try a vegetable semi permanent instead like La Riche Directions, Crazy Colour or Stargazer - they have subdued shades as well as bright ones.

ETA: even if this is a spammer trying to get their post count up, the advice still stands for anybody else; if you're having any reaction to a box colour, stop using them before you do yourself an injury.
