panelling a bathroom advice needed

I am going to panel out a cloakroom/shower room I was going to put skirting around first and then stick mdf 6mm thick as the panels, with moulding on to give a period feel. On top of that some kind of dado to finish.
This will then be sealed and painted and won't really be coming into much contact with water as the shower is tiled.
Does this sound OK
Would thin ply wood be better to use.
I intend to get wood cut at store to near to size, so it easy to handle
3 walls are plasterboard and 1 is solid outside
