gap insurance is ideal if you think you are likely to right off a car on finance. Never bothered personally.
I'm sure the OP didn't plan to...

I'd never had GAP insurance, but bought it in 2008 when buying a nearly new Qashqai. Almost 3 years later the car was written off and I was glad I had taken it out.

Why would you get a settlement figure on a Lease Car?

Wouldn't the Lease Co be getting a settlement figure from their finance company?

Then informing the person or company leasing the car of any shortfall.

Gap insurance is worthwhile if you have no savings. I'd prefer to self insure
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

ER81 - you must be the only person in the UK to NOT have GAP insurance rammed down your throat by the salesman when buying a car.
I'm not quite sure I understand how old the car is or how long you've had it, but if it's only 3 weeks, the value can't have changed that much? In any case you need to independently find out how much your car is worth (pre crash) and haggle with them if necessary. Try parkers.co.uk for a starter valuation, and also check how much similar cars are advertised for.

I think he was saying the accident was 3 weeks ago, not that he had the car for 3 weeks.
