Drain Smells

We've got an extension with a downstairs bathroom - every so often we get a pongy smell coming through which is like drains. It doesn't happen all the time and can happen when you have a shower, flush the loo or just run the tap in the basin. I've cleaned all the drains visible and put drain stuff down the others, but we still get it.

Has anyone had anything similar happen and how did you deal with it (did it cost a lot)? I've seen the companies which can put cameras down your drains and I'm thinking of calling one - it sounds expensive but not really sure what else to do about this. There's no blockage that we've noticed - nothing gets backed up and we've had the drain covers up outside and can't see any obvious problem (it actually looked quite clean for a sewage drain).

We have only owned the house for about 8 months so it could be a longer running problem which we weren't aware of (did get a full survey done though and they didn't find anything).

Smell is probably due to the water from either your bath/shower or sink trap being sucked out when you flush the toilet, this allows the stench from the sewer to escape. Try running water into the dry traps and see if the smell goes, if it does you will need a trap with an anti syphon valve fitted.
