bit of a Post Office disaster

I recently applied online for the Post Office Instant Saver Issue 7. Interest rate about 1.2%. The paperwork came though fine with Acc number and sort code and the PO stipulate a choice account activation by either making the initial deposit by cash by taking the forms and the deposit to a main Post Office or - by sending a personal cheque with the forms back to the PO in the envelope provided. I chose the cash option but when I got to the counter - the bar code on my letter didn't work and I was advised to post a cheque (I don't have a cheque book) I rang the PO customer Service and was told the staff were wrong and to try another PO. So I did - and the same thing happened. I rang CS again and was told to re-apply at the PO - but Issue 7 is no longer available and the interest rate has dropped so I refused that option.
I was told instead to send the completed and signed forms back to the PO (but of course I can't post cash...) The call centre guy said we will send you a card and stuff and then you can make the payment...:(
Something tells me this isn't going to work out and they don't want to pay me the 'old' higher interest rate.
